Look after mates during wild Australia Day weekend weather
Police and Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey is urging Queenslanders to keep a lookout for mates and neighbours who may require assistance during severe weather this weekend.
With the Bureau of Meteorology predicting more wild weather between the State’s central and southern coasts including torrential rain, flash flooding and high winds, Mr Dempsey is asking Queenslanders to be prepared.
"There are weather warnings for coastal communities between Rockhampton and the State’s south east. We have seen creek and river systems rising very rapidly as the rain depression makes its way down the coast so people living in low-lying coastal areas or near river systems should be prepared to leave if waters rise. Emergency crews are urging people to have a plan to move to higher ground ready if need be and to ensure they have enough food, water and other provisions such as a torch and fully charged mobile phone should access to their community be cut off. Please don’t let children play in floodwaters or drains and motorists should never risk their lives by driving through floodwaters – if it’s flooded, forget it!"
