Mother remains critically ill, husband fighting for life after horror highway crash

ONLY a month ago, pregnant Ipswich mum Tammy Boyce was excitedly planning to sew nursery decorations before the birth of her third baby.
-
But last night the 28-year-old was on life support as her condition deteriorated and family were being called to her bedside to make a decision. Ms Boyce and partner Nathan Boorer were critically injured in a horrific head-on crash on the Bruce Highway at Kulangoor on the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday night. A Nambour Hospital spokeswoman said last night Ms Boyce was "very critically ill'' and fighting for her life in intensive care. Mr Boorer was in a stable condition in Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital after being airlifted yesterday from Nambour. The couple's two children, aged 5 and 9, who had also been in the car, were discharged from Nambour Hospital late Thursday and were in the care of grandparents. The family had been heading north to holiday in Hervey Bay when their Nissan Pulsar - packed with pillows, sleeping bags, children's scooters and an Esky - was struck head-on by a Subaru Liberty travelling in the wrong direction. After the initial crash, which killed the 54-year-old Subaru driver and injured his 50-year-old male passenger, the car was struck by a semi-trailer from behind.
Reports from other motorists suggested the gold Subaru Liberty that is believed to have caused the crash was involved in a number of near misses over several kilometres. Ms Boyce and her family had been travelling in the right direction - northbound - when the accident happened. Only last month, Ms Boyce had been talking about buying new material to decorate and co-ordinate the nursery. The talented mother ran her own business sewing handmade children's clothes and accessories. Police said last night details of why the driver was on the wrong side of the road and travelling in the wrong direction would not be revealed until a coronial inquest. The accident took the state's road toll to 24...
end.
Comment ...
Early reports said the driver on the wrong side of the road was known to Police. Lessons will need to be learned when Police can release information they have about his history. How many complaints from neighbours? Were Police on duty on the highway? Their presence may have been encouraging drivers to do the right thing.
Speed cameras don't provide supervision and motivation for drivers to stay safe and avoid dangerous, inattentive behaviour.
Reduced visible police presence because speed camera deployments are in place means less potential to protect the innocent when it counts.

Who could ever tally the impact of this tragedy? The truck driver who could not do anything to avoid his collision? The family, friends, schools, colleagues, Police and Emergency services workers. So sad.

What allegations may his neighbours and colleagues have advised Police about for the protection of the community?
Who provided the substances that may have contributed to the strength and ferocity so a 19 year old could, allegedly, have harmed 5 officers?
Hotels and outlets should see there is a problem with the behaviour of clients and take action to minimise antisocial behaviour.

Would such a driver possibly have a history with the Police? What allegations may his neighbours and colleagues have advised Police about for the protection of the community?
Who provided the substances that may have contributed to the strength and ferocity so a 19 year old could, allegedly, have harmed 5 officers?
