Tones Road at Mansfield has been in a poor condition for as long as I can remember.
I suspect that historically the area had a lower priority as a Housing Commission area which I believe is discriminatory and unjust.
Council does not have resources to seal the edges of the road and make it safe for the hundreds of families that use the rugby league sporting facilities each year.
The dust generated is unacceptable and it distracts drivers when they have to negotiate potholes and third world conditions. Safety of children should lift dangerous roads on the priority list.
As part of the very welcome work to make Wecker Road safer outside the Christian Outreach College council parked its heavy machinery in Tones Road.
When asked if they could repair the damage it was claimed they never used the area for parking despite photos which demonstrated someone was leaving their property there.
Opening up the Scrub Road extension has potential to bring hundreds of extra vehicles into an area that is congested could motivate achievable solutions:
Sealing Tones Road safely rather than returning to do half hearted patch ups twice a year would be welcome.
- Create safe crossing points across Bulimba Creek to keep traffic and children off Wecker Road, either with a new pedestrian bridge or stepping stones over the creek.
- Create safe car parking area on Tones Road that serves the Football Club, the Soccer club, the school and local residents.
- Provide incentive for children to walk the last 600 metres to school with safe drop off points away from the front of the school
- Recognise that a short walk to and from school, over a creek is a good stress reducer for children, and good for the environment.
- Make a safe path under the Wecker Road Bridge to keep dozens of children off Wecker Road
Council has paid more than $200,000 to a PR company to manage the Scrub Road project.
I acknowledge the improvements that have been made in the area. A safe crossing outside COCB was needed 15 years ago so the work is appreciated. Yandina Park soccer fields are currently undergoing a major makeover. My soccer adviser says playing on a concrete like surface was not a lot of fun.
