QUEENSLAND SCHOOLS CHALLENGED TO REDUCE WATER AND WIN $5000

Primary schools have the chance to win $5000 for demonstrating excellence in water saving techniques and behaviours as part of a new recognition program.

The Waterwise Schools Recognition Program encourages students to take greater individual and community responsibility for the sustainable use of water.

Students can take action to reduce their school's water footprint, and involve their families and communities in water conservation activities."

The program offered three levels of accreditation and prizes of $500 (10) and $5000 (5) for schools judged most successful in achieving Waterwise outcomes.

Participating schools will monitor school water use, conduct school and home water audits and demonstrate how they are implementing the Water: Learn it for life! program at their school.

. A strategy for harnessing water wasted at bubblers and drink fountains demonstrated recently by a school had 2 litre icecream buckets in the trough and a larger bin nearby so it can be used in gardens.

. We collect a large bin of water regularly via dew collecting in the diverter on a buildings at school

. Making the installation of any new bubblers more water efficient would be an advantage would allow significant amounts of water for school gardens.

. We have more than 250,000 litres of tank water when they are filled to capacity
