I was sorry I only heard about the Music Count Us In program on the day it happened on ABC Breakfast Radio. Organisers wanted 350,000 school students from 1,600 schools around Australia to sing the same song at the same time. The Prime Minister and his cabinet had just finished learning the lyrics in time to participate in the ambitious project to highlight the importance of music education.
I have fond memories of carting the large speaker box from the office to our classroom to join in the ABC's excellent "Let's Sing" program but they are too trendy to allow broadcast music for children these days. I guess the ABC still publishes a Singing program for schools to purchase.
While it would be great to rebuild the role of singing it must be increasingly hard to find to accommodate all the demands on the school program. I would like to see a radio network playing child friendly material and songs, offering parent resources overnight.
Correction ... It was Environment Minister Peter Garrett who lead the singing, not Kevin Rudd.
