New Farm Park will continue providing a display of Jacarandas, first introduced into Australia at the City Botanic gardens.
Mature trees presented an unacceptable risk to the public due to disease and decay.
A strategy of not planting new trees in the vicinity of existing mature trees means it takes more effort to fill a blank spot. Every example of a spectacular tree should have have new trees developing in adjacent areas to minimise the challenge of replacing them as they have to be removed.
A commitment to making stunning displays featuring Australian trees should be top of the agenda for Council. Lack of maintenance saw a former appealing display of bottle brush trees along Creek Road die off, now it is an eyesore.
The occasional examples of a spectacular Flame Tree, Bottlebrush or Golden Penda around Brisbane demonstrate there are native trees could be used to create stunning street and park displays. Gradually, relying on introduced species to create stunning colour could be reduced. Colour and life on large islands and traffic thorougfares is good for frustrated motorists.
Using large areas of land adjacent to access points on the recycled water pipeline to create forests would benefit Brisbane. The money wasted chasing carbon credits should be used in our own back yard.
