Botanic Gardens Desalination Plant

A desalination plant is operating at the Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens producing up to 32,000 litres of water per day, 11 million litres a year using solar power during the day and electricity at night. Construction cost $250,000.

Five groundwater treatment plants supplying 20 million litres of water each day have been added to Brisbane’s water supply network.

50 million litres of water are needed to irrigate 60-hectares of gardens at the gardens.

80-metre deep salt-water bore located below the underlying rock.

14,000 children visit the gardens each year to participate in the educational programs.

A feature I find fascinating is the Bonsai display, where you can see a tiny replica of a spectacular large tree a few metres away.

A serious waste of water in the community is school bubblers ... one school uses 2 litre ice cream containers int the trough, tipping them into containers to use on the gardens. That's great but it is in the construction phase every time a drinking facility is installed or replaced that a sustainable strategy is needed. Schools with an opportunity to let waste water soak into a garden or outdoor area should be given help to make it happen.
