Brisbane City Council believes more than 2,200 car trips are taken off the roads every day by people cycling along Toowong's Bicentennial and East Brisbane's Mowbray Park bikeways. This is based on 2,875 total cycle trips being recorded over two bikeways, with a counting device. Council claims an average car produces 4.5 tonnes of gas emissions every year so every use of a bike instead of a car is helping make a difference.
Brisbane has a path network of 760km, and increasing, reducing congestion and providing options for people to reduce the footprint they leave on the world. Paths must be included in planning to avoid dopey outcomes on display in the Pine Mountain Road area where riders have to leave the path and walk up steep, narrow streets to reach the track.
