Good on you Omar, remember I said you were not a lazy lump?
I am SO happy you have found work with Mission Australia.
Omar has an amazing story to tell and he deserves good success.
Fast facts ... Omar needed to escape Iraq ... headed to Australia ... the boat he boarded in Indonesia (took all his money) was intercepted by the Navy ... his documents fell to the bottom of the sea ... taken to Naru and spent two years in detention ... Omar worked in the hospital using his physiotherapy skills and helping in the kitchen, cooking for hundreds of detainees.
The Government would not provide shoes, he had reactions to the phosphate, ... finally released from detention and given refugee status ... moved to Brisbane, began english courses at TAFE and delivering Pizza.
When he began falling over - doctors found he had developed a condition called 'sellabillia' (??) which attacks the nervous system. Omar spent 8 months in PA Hospital.
Some doctors believe it was a reaction to the phosphate and not being provided with shoes while in detention on Naru.
Omar's family in Iraq still experience terrible circumstances and violence.
Despite continuing health issues and concern for his family Omar has a cheerful and happy disposition. He appreciates the resources provided for him in Brisbane, a nice flat. He has received wonderful support from some community agencies.
While he was waiting for work Omar decided he could not be a lazy lump so he has to be the Park Champion across the road from his flat, even using his walker to shift the weeds.
