Queensland has celebrated Arbor Day since 1890.
With amazing insight to the importance of trees for shade, preventing erosion and helping the environment, children were given time off school ... to plant trees! Yay.
Schools celebrating Arbor Day are entitled to 50 free plants from the Brisbane City Council.
But wait, there's more ... Schools can claim a native plant for each student enrolled in Year One.
A request on school letterhead can be faxed to Council's Free Plants Program, 3334 0011 before 30 September 2008.
... A fabulous tree for children to enjoy is the Golden Penda or ‘Expo Gold’. This spectacular tree originated in Queensland. Flowers explode "like popcorn" and birds feed on the nectar. It grows well from cuttings so children can it home to nurture in a pot or garden.
