Did the LNP ever tell the public their intention was to spend millions on PR stunts?
Why do they employ as many media managers, minders, spinners as previous labor governments?
Government goes grassroots to stay in touch with Queenslanders
Queenslanders
will even more opportunity to find out about the workings of their
State Government and local initiatives with the launch of a regular
state-wide newsletter next month. The newsletter will highlight and explain important government programs and projects which will benefit all Queenslanders and will be localised at a regional level.
It will be delivered to household mailboxes across the state each month and will be funded by savings made through the Newman Government’s crackdown on excessive public advertising.
A Government spokesperson said advertising had been cut by around 44 per cent year-on-year.
“It has fallen from $45.3 million between July and December 2011, to $25.54 million between July and December 2012,” he said.
“We have slashed tens of millions of dollars from government advertising, which is exactly what Queenslanders want, and from those savings we will produce a useful, localised, regular newsletter to help keep people in touch with grassroots Government programs.
“It will be similar to the highly successful Living in Brisbane newsletter produced by the Brisbane City Council, and other newsletters produced by Councils across the state.
“People appreciate the ‘local’ touch, and find it particularly useful for government schemes to be explained in a straightforward way which applies directly to their lives and livelihoods.
“We’re looking forward to getting feedback on the first issue from Queenslanders right across the state, and their opinions will help shape the newsletter as it evolves over the coming months.
“This is part of our drive for the Queensland government to become the best government for service delivery in the nation, and one that is responsive to the needs of people throughout the state.”

Why not rely on good governing to get the message out?
The LNP in opposition would condemn swiftly and demand more satisfactory outcomes but now uses the same tricks.
G-rated outdoor advertising
While happy LNP is giving the proposal some oxygen, sending it to a Health Committee for several months when the issue has been around for years is disappointing. I would have expected LNP to have draft legislation in place that could be presented in Parliament and put out for discussion by all members of Parliament. For years I have believed we should be showing respect for children and adults who don't need or want to see offensive material on open display.
PR newsletters -
The $4 million cost floated in the media for this stunt will just be the tip of the iceburg. How sad that all that posturing about waste, the inefficiency of government advertising has been brushed aside. I doubt that the number of PR staff has been reduced by the LNP.
What is going on in Transport?
The massive waste of a failed Bus service inquiry, thought bubbles to allow Segways and undermine the bicycle helmet safety law. It seems to be very foolish to add another distraction on the road side with Segways being allowed on often poorly maintained footpaths.
It is already dangerous because of the use of headsets/ipods/pushbikes.
(The Minister should have followed the advice of Margret Thatcher regarding stunts that will come back to haunt - when she was asked to jump up and down.)
The government is bowing down to support a private enterprise selling Segways.
Promoters have so easily got a supportive hearing from the Minister but should set up safe riding areas at their own expense and not use challenging, busy public spaces, putting the safety of others at risk.
It's curious that the Segway stunt was lobbed on councils to manage after the failed bus inquiry.
What advice was given to the LNP by the councils consulted about the introduction of Segways?
Unborn children killed in car accidents -
I want LNP to approve a change in the guidelines that prevent an unborn child being acknowledged in the road toll. Failing to acknowledge a child because he or she is under 500 grams in weight or has not reached the arbitrary 20 week age is a disgrace. If an unborn child is killed as a result of dangerous/criminal driving behaviour the offender should be subject to the provisions of the criminal code.
Urban Utilities
The sewer and water people have made a significant effort to clean up the most recent mess in Stan Fraser Park which happens each time there is a heavy rain event. Their warning signage is pathetic, barely legible, "There may have been contamination ..." Their call centre is a joke as complaints that should be dealt with immediately and urgently swirl around for days/weeks before ever reaching someone of influence, if they even do get that far. I am disgusted at what they do to Bulimba Creek and a very busy bikeway, let alone the homes close by.
