Numinbah Correctional Centre for women prisoners

Minister for Police and Community Safety
The Honourable Jack Dempsey

Numinbah Correctional Centre expanded

Corrective services in South East Queensland have received a boost with Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey officially opening an expansion of the Numbinbah Correctional Centre.

Mr Dempsey said the newly-constructed independent living accommodation would house low security prisoners at the facility.

“The Government has made a long-term commitment to Numinbah Correctional Centre with $2 million spent on the construction project,” Mr Dempsey said.

“The new infrastructure provides Numinbah’s correctional officers with state-of-the-art working facilities and is one of many capital works projects taking place in Queensland’s correctional centres.”

Mr Dempsey said Numinbah Correctional Centre officers demonstrated exceptional dedication to preparing prisoners for release to the community or community-based supervision.

“Numinbah is a fine example of a correctional centre that aims to well-equip prisoners for life outside of prison, providing them with essential skills such as self-responsibility, independence, practical life skills and work ethic and dedication,” he said.

“I commend Numinbah’s staff on the fine work they undertake at the centre. They all make a valuable contribution to community safety through the criminal justice system.”

Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) Commissioner Marlene Morison said the opening of new accommodation at the centre marked the final step in Numinbah’s transition from a centre that once housed both men and women, to a female-only, low custody facility.

“The transition process commenced in 2011 and was designed to increase access for female prisoners in south east Queensland to low custody placement,” Ms Morison said.
“Male prisoners left the centre in early March last year and on 12 March 2012 the centre became a female-only low custody facility.”
Ms Morison said within the new accommodation, Numinbah women can take the final step in preparing for their release.
