Corrective Services appear to have acted in a mean spirited manner, refusing
to assist an Aboriginal family to bury a family member who has been in prison
for 32 years. Garnet Mickelo was jailed for killing a man.
An ABC report confirms Mr Mickelo was an inspiration and mentor to young
men, convincing them to get their lives on track.
One of the saddest sights you will see in Cherbourg is the funeral
processions and family members who are in jail, in prison dress, handcuffed
following the mourners. A walk around the cemetery, hearing stories and learning
about the tragic loss of life is heartbreaking.
The government should support the Mikelo family. A simple gesture of support
will help heal the sadness, create an opportunity for forgiveness and hope for
the future.
A clever adviser will be telling the Minister to claim the Government is not
in the ‘funeral business.’ It should be in the people business.
The Cherbourg community deserves every positive act of goodwill to rise
above the despair and tragedy of way too many sad stories.
